Novamont, a certified B Corporation, is a leading international player in the bioplastics sector and development of renewable bioproducts and biochemicals.
A pioneer in the circular bioeconomy sector, in addition to its own plants (4 in Italy and 1 in Estonia), Novamont has also 1 R&D Centre and 2 technological hubs covering a wide range of skills and specialist areas with facilities ranging from lab scale units to innovative pilot plants.
Over the years, it has developed and engineered 13 proprietary technologies, 4 of which were world firsts, for the production of bioplastics and bioproducts, creating synergies between different areas of study (bioplastics, biotechnology, biotechnology, agronomy, organic chemistry, green products).
Mater-Bi is the innovative family of bioplastics containing renewable feedstock arising from Novamont research and innovation dating back to more than thirty years. In accordance with the main European and American standards, it is biodegradable and compostable in integrated anaerobic digestion and composting systems and industrial and home compost and biodegradable in soil.
The main areas of use are waste sorting, chain stores, institutional catering, packaging and agriculture. Where appropriate and preferable, Mater-Bi products may also be chemically or mechanically recycled with recovery of valuable materials. High-performance multi-material packaging made from Mater-Bi and paper can be recycled both in the paper process flow and along with organic waste. In keeping with the Novamont circular bioeconomy, Mater-Bi is a product that continuously evolves towards growing sustainability and circularity, as a result of a technology development aiming at using feedstock from renewable sources in an increasingly efficient manner.
Novamont has its headquarters in Novara, manufacturing facilities and technology hubs in Terni, Bottrighe (RO) and Patrica (FR), a production facility in Dagö (Estonia), a Joint Venture with Versalis, Matrìca, in Porto Torres (SS), and research and development laboratories in Novara, Piana di Monte Verna (CE) and Porto Torres (at Matrìca). It has foreign branches in Germany, France, Spain and the United States.
It is established in more than 40 countries around the world through its distributor network and BioBag International, a world-leading company in the development, production and marketing of certified compostable and biodegradable products, part of Novamont since 2021.
In partnership with Coldiretti, in 2021, Novamont established Mater-Agro (85% Novamont, 10% Coldiretti and 5% Consorzi Agrari d'Italia), a newco aiming to promote a new open innovation model involving agriculture and industry, helping farmers to maintain good crop yields by using low-impact bioproducts and biomaterials.
Novamont has been part of Versalis since October 2023.
