At Versalis, sustainability means playing an active role in environmental protection as well as  social and human development, while ensuring long-term economic and financial stability. Our goal is to create shared value for all stakeholders over the short, medium and long term, focusing on innovation and technology as transformation drivers. Our aim is responsible growth based on decarbonisation, circular models and care for people and local communities.

With this in mind, we remain committed to the transition pathway for the chemical industry that will rely increasingly on product specialisation, circularity and biochemistry, aiming to achieve our decarbonisation targets, whilst aligning with Eni strategy and values.

The Versalis for 2024 Sustainability Report illustrates the progress of our transformation plan, detailing projects implemented and results achieved.

More specifically, we outline:

  • Decarbonisation: as part of the ongoing process to achieve net zero by 2050, the transformation plan will enable savings of around 1 million tonnes of CO₂ (Scope 1 and 2) in Italy by 2029. As the transformation process continues, interim targets have been reset to ensure alignment with industrial priorities and the new backdrop: the current target calls for a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035 compared with the 2018 baseline.
  • Circular Economy: Versalis is developing a fully-fledged circular plastics and rubber platform. In June 2025, we opened a demonstration plant in Mantua for chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste using our proprietary Hoop® technology (input capacity: 6 kton per year). In Porto Marghera, an advanced mechanical recycling plant has been operational since March 2025, with an output capacity of 20 kton of plastics per year produced from secondary raw materials (SRMs).
  • Biochemicals: following the acquisition of Novamont, we have consolidated our position in the biochemicals sector, focusing on solutions capable of reducing environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions. Our integrated technology platforms utilise – wholly or in part – biobased feedstock and are applied to products such as biodegradable and compostable plastics, bioherbicides and biolubricants.
  • Specialisation: we are creating new opportunities to gain a greater foothold in downstream markets, focusing on strategic sectors with higher added value. Since 2021 with Finproject and 2024 with Tecnofilm, we have extended our portfolio to include high-added-value products, entering sectors such as premium footwear, design, furniture, safety and automotive, as well those that are key to the energy transition (wire & cable).

The time has come to embrace the necessary change, invest in innovation, open up to new technology and market sectors and adapt with speed and agility. We firmly believe that this transformation plan is a pivotal step towards a more competitive, resilient and, above all, sustainable Versalis.
